Part 1 Issue #889

Your Customers Aren't Broke.
They're Cautious.

When money feels tighter, customers don't necessarily stop spending altogether. They get pickier about where it goes.

A recent PayPal survey found that 58% of Americans are more concerned about their finances, yet 64% still expect to spend the same amount or more this holiday season.

Interesting, isn't it?

And while the survey focused on holiday spending, there's a larger lesson here for virtually ANY business – and not just during the holidays.

People may be worried about money, but that doesn't mean they've stopped spending it.

They're just thinking a little harder about where it goes.

Maybe they're comparing more options. Asking more questions. Reading reviews. Putting off a decision until they're more comfortable with it.

And when sales slow down, what's one of the first things many business owners do?

Lower their prices.

Sometimes that's necessary. But sometimes it's like treating a headache by buying a smaller hat.

The problem may not be your price. It may be that customers aren't quite convinced you're worth it.

Think about your own buying habits. Haven't you paid a little more for something because you trusted the company, felt better about the quality, or knew you'd be taken care of if something went wrong?

Your customers aren't much different.

They want to know they're making a smart decision. They want to avoid disappointment. And they certainly don't want to regret spending money they worked hard to earn.

So instead of immediately reaching for the discount button, look for ways to make the decision easier. Demonstrate your value. Explain what makes your business a better choice. Answer the questions customers may be hesitant to ask.

And make sure the experience you deliver backs up the promises you make.

Because when people become more careful with their money, confidence can be just as important as price.

Your customers may be cautious. But that doesn't mean they're unreachable.
